Maternity Home

Wesley Inn Maternity Program, which provides homeless pregnant and parenting teens with a safe place and the resources they need to grow into healthy, independent adults fully capable of supporting themselves and their families.

The Wesley Inn Maternity Program, a free two-year program for up to 12 pregnant and parenting young women (ages 14-20) and their children (ages 0-5). At Wesley Inn, Jonathan’s Place supplies safe, stable housing and therapeutic services, plus instruction in life skills to increase the ability of participants to live independently when they graduate from the program. During their first month of care, residents establish personalized wrap-around services like childcare, education, immunizations, therapy, and mainstream resources, like food and clothing. Homeless pregnant women are less likely to receive adequate prenatal care, so their children are at risk for low birth weight, which can harm their cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. The Food Matters study reports that addressing these problems during pregnancy will increase the chances that children will be born healthier and with a better opportunity for good health across their developmental life. The Wesley Inn program responds by encouraging regular medical appointments and nutritious eating choices by supplying transportation and counseling.

Pregnant homeless teens are likely to have experienced abuse and other trauma, as well. New residents are assessed by trained therapists and are soon attending weekly counseling sessions. In addition, residents at Wesley Inn are connected with a case manager who works with them throughout the entire duration of the program and assists in developing behavioral and educational goals that increase their ability to live independently and sustain their children. Before their third month in the program, residents are enrolled in school and/or working. Young women in the program take part in weekly life skills classes focused on goal setting and monthly financial literacy instruction, such as budgeting and banking. Jonathan’s Place staff assist residents with acquiring a Texas driver’s license and Real ID, which are essential in gaining employment and applying for housing. We also assist girls with acquiring G.E.D. credentials, enrollment in school, college, or trade programs and with securing financial support and scholarships. Our educational partners include Dallas ISD, Red Oak ISD, Duncanville ISD, Texas Can Academy, and local college admissions counselors.

The Wesley Inn program enables young homeless mothers to live safely with their children. Infants benefit from prenatal medical care and nutrition, plus scheduled vaccinations and pediatric evaluations after birth. Residents take part in parenting classes twice a month. New parents receive baby clothing, diapering supplies, feeding support, and infant equipment. Daily childcare is available, including educational daycare for toddlers. Mothers and children enjoy recreational activities and the benefits of living and learning in a supportive community.
